The Bible. The foundation of western civilization. Read it & meet the main character. I'm still working on this. The translation I prefer, and link to here, is the original Jerusalem Bible. This is a translation that treats God as a triune "person," so you can have a relationship with Him. Whereas the desexified language of the "New" versions refer to Him as The Great It.
The Imitation of Christ by Thomas á Kempis. The second most widely read book. A chapter a day provides food for thought and peace for the soul. Many variations on "What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his soul?" I'm still working on this, too.
Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams by DeMarco & Lister. Second edition of a classic book that talks sense in the workplace, from relating to others, to office size and arrangements, to the life and work of teams. What to do to have an organization in which people are important. While reading it, I found myself saying 'Yeah this is how it should be.'
The 2002 What Color Is Your Parachute: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career Changers (Paper) by Richard Nelson Bolles. This edition of Bolles' annual update. The suggested exercises give you the chance for careful self-examination: what do I really want. Well written, well drawn (great graphics!), and asks the right questions. But, no guarantees.
